Maria Johnson- Assistant Principal

Maria Laskowski McCarty has been a dedicated member of the Onslow County School District since 1991. She began her career at Jacksonville High School, where she completed her student teaching and later served as an English teacher. After earning her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Mrs. McCarty transitioned into school leadership as an Assistant Principal at Jacksonville High School.

Shortly thereafter, she was named Principal of Northwoods Park Middle School, where she served for five years. Under her leadership, the school earned recognition as an Honors School of Excellence. Mrs. McCarty then became Principal of Richlands High School, which was recognized as a World View Partnership School—an honor that provided students the opportunity to collaborate with a sister school in Denmark.

Following her time at Richlands, Mrs. McCarty assumed the role of Principal at Northside High School. Between 2010 and 2018, Northside earned multiple distinctions for academic success, including being ranked 7th in the state of North Carolina for student growth.

Mrs. McCarty concluded her full-time administrative career at Jacksonville High School, where she led students and staff through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, Jacksonville High achieved student growth scores in the top 5% statewide.

After retirement, Mrs. McCarty has joyfully returned to Northside High School as a part-time Assistant Principal, where she continues to support Mr. Staley and the administrative team in their efforts to make Northside the premier high school in Onslow County.
